Parent leaders prepare to launch Parent Watch.

Communication with school officials

Parents sometimes feel like they are unwelcome or unwanted at their children's schools.  FOCUS is working to promote better communication with school officials at the local, district and state levels.  Early efforts with principals in Oak Ridge area schools have shown that if parents are engaged properly, they contribute significantly to the success of their children's schools.

English Classes for Parents

Parent leaders worked with school district officials and Sadler Elementary School to provide English classes for parents where their children go to school.  This encourages and empowers parents to participate actively in the education of their children by decreasing language barriers.

Parent Watch

Parent Leaders from Oak Ridge area schools are working with OCPS School Board officials, Orange County Sheriff and sponsor Bright House to create a Parent Watch program.  Incidents such as children being approahed by adults with alcohol and drugs; fights; and, a high concentration of sexual offenders in the area have caused the parent leaders to seek this remedy.  Leaders were honored by OCPS at a recent board meeting for their work.  Click here to see the video.
