Housing Opportunities

Good Shepherd hosts a Foreclosure Prevention Forum with partner HANDS.

Adequate housing is a basic human need in all communities.  However, some struggle to make this a reality.

Affordable housing

FOCUS congregations such as Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist and Good Shepherd Catholic have both worked on affordable housing issues in their communities.

  • Mt. Zion Baptist secured commitments from the City of Orlando to make properties available for the development of affordable housing downtown; the church also runs homebuyer education classes with the help of housing counseling agency HANDS of Central Florida;
  • Good Shepherd Catholic Community addressed the need for Workforce Housing.  In particular, Good Shepherd leaders got a commitment from Orange County's Board of County commissioners that language in a bill to create workforce housing would base qualifications on income and not based on occupation.  "The church secretary deserves workforce housing as much as the school teacher," said one testimonial at their Action Meeting with 220 in attendance.

Foreclosure prevention

FOCUS leaders are working at the local and national levels of government to prevent unnecessary and avoidable foreclosures.  Good Shepherd Catholic has held workshops in English and Spanish as well as supported the work of PICO in Washington in getting new legislation to assist homeowners in getting loan modifications, court mediation or other programs to help them save their homes.  Click here to learn more about foreclosure prevention.
